Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
Made for construction locations, where supplies should be transported on surfaces which are not paved are rough terrain forklifts. The correct and safe use of rough terrain forklifts is really important to be able to guarantee the wellbeing of both the driver and other workers at the work location.
Terrain
These trucks are built for rough terrain, but care must still be taken to prevent tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and when lifting, must only be operated on level ground.
Speed
Even if there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations governing forklift speed limitations, forklift operators should drive at a safe speed every time. Driving on uneven or rough terrain needs even more caution. Steering, in particular, can be very risky at faster speeds.
Incline
Keep the load on the uphill side of the machine if operating on an incline. The rule of thumb is drive up, and then back down. Never try to lift a load while operating on an inclined surface. The change in the center of gravity can cause the machinery to tip over.
Safety Devices
Drivers of forklifts must always put on seat belts like any driver. Check that the overhead guard is firmly in place. Depending upon the working environment, hearing and eye protection might need to be worn. Check that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
The operating conditions of a forklift could be affected by weather. Speed, turning and load handling might need to be adjusted to guarantee safety when operating a forklift in snow, ice or rain.
